Packaging is an integral part of product branding. It’s not just there for practical reasons, it’s often the first interaction people will have with a brand.
With tens of thousands of products being launched every year, it’s incredibly difficult to stand out, which is why a good first impression (and a lasting one) can make a real difference to the success of a product, or business.
On a practical level, the packaging of course needs to protect a product. It needs to survive packing, transportation and handling in retail settings.
Many consumers now expect sustainability from brands, so it needs to be eco-friendly too.
On a design level, packaging must communicate the features and benefits of a product, and incorporate any legal labelling that is required. It has to stand out on the shelf, create recognition for a brand and just be generally amazing and memorable.
And it has to come in on budget too – it doesn’t matter how amazing the packaging is if it’s not viable in profit margin terms.
Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, this is what we’re here for.
Good packaging design is one of our core service offerings at EBY, and is something we have excelled in for more than 20 years.
We’ve designed stand-out packaging for a wide variety of products including pet food, health drinks and kitchen utensils.
Working closely with our clients, we manage the entire process from start to finish. This includes initial market research to understand target audiences, sales outlets and competitors and research of the product itself.
We’ll look at different materials, consider how customers will interact with the packaging and how it will look on the shelf.
Our designers will create prototypes incorporating existing company branding, or create new branding if desired.
Prototypes will be extensively tested in all the various scenarios throughout the packing, transportation, display and handling stages of a product’s life cycle.
Once a preferred design is chosen, we will take it to production and delivery. We can help with point of sale displays and any other product marketing materials or campaign assets needed to generate sales.
Summary
Good packaging is integral to the success of a product and if done well, it can have a big impact on sales and volumes.
Even if it doesn’t have to stand out on the shelf because it’s sold online, an item still has to be safely packaged and posted. In that scenario, it needs to survive the delivery process and still make an impression when it’s ultimately unboxed.
Receiving an item or gift that arrives in beautiful, memorable and intact packaging can be the deciding factor for someone choosing to buy again or recommend the business to others.
